20-21 GL3321: Environmental Geology Project

As you might expect the situation is going to be different this coming year for the project, but overall I will make sure that it is the less disruptive possible for you.
In fact, my plan is that you will be still able to work on data, and produce some or all of them yourselves in the laboratory, even if you are not going in the field. This is the main point of your project, producing data. This is NOT a literature project, it is required of you to have a full project from A to Z: background, sampling, data acquisition, and data interpretation/discussion.
In fact, the important point of your project is to own it. So you need to think of what you would like to do, for next year, and consequently contact the relevant supervisor(s). Discuss with them what can be done, and sort out together a project. Of course because this year, the project might not be able to start from scratch, you might need to do a bit of compromise, but overall it is your choice, because it is an INDEPENDENT project.

Here below is the list of the potential supervisors, with the topics that they are working on. Please, do not ask a supervisor to do a different topic that the ones listed specifically for her/him.
They will each take a limited number of projects, so it will be on the principle of first come, first served, BUT you need to contact them, each one, with an articulated project, not with the “what project I can do with you?” attitude. YOU NEED TO THINK WHAT QUESTION(S) YOU WOULD LIKE TO ANSWER, ON A SPECIFIC TOPIC. For example, last year, somebody worked with me on the contribution of urban pollution into a specific river, going through London.

I require some initiative from you on this, it is very important, because as it is your decision, it will be for you a much better motivation to work during the academic year. The project will start in October, and will finish at the end of the second term. As the course coordinator I am here to help you, make sure that it is going fine. I will also supervise a few project if some of you are interested.

Dave Lowry: methane, and other Greenhouse gases in different sites.
Rebecca Fisher: methane, and other Greenhouse gases in different sites.
Nathalie Grassineau: water contamination; soil contamination; vegetation contamination in different sites.
Anirban Basu: chemical reaction related to contamination, and groundwater.

So over the summer until September, you need to contact a potential supervisor, but first, you need to think what you would like to do, and what environmental question you would like to answer for your 3rd year project.

If you are not sure, I am very happy to help you to determine a topic and direct you towards the right person. I am going away for a little bit, but I will be contactable by email.

Meanwhile be safe, and have a good summer.

Best wishes

Nathalie
