This course examines major themes and issues in the comparative study of political institutions. Its main focus is on the UK/Western Europe and the USA , but with other countries and regions also referred to as appropriate. The introductory lectures explain the nature and aims of the course and outline the methods and problems of cross-national comparison; later lectures examine the institutional structures and political dynamics of liberal democracies. The course ends with a consideration of the institutions of international politics.
