20-21 SN2113: Twentieth Century Mexican Visual Arts And Film
This course will introduce students to some of the most important artistic movements from Mexico's rich cultural heritage. It will analyse a combination of paintings, photographs and artistic movements from the last century in Mexico. The artists examined on this course have contributed greatly to twentieth century art history. Some are from Mexico, others have arrived on Mexican soil and have made it their home. We will see on this course how perceptions of Mexico, its people and its landscapes have shaped twentieth century artistic discourses both within and beyond Mexican frontiers.
The course will be taught over two hours during weekly seminars in term 1 only. There will be a blend of formal teaching and group work activities. Students are encouraged to participate and hone in on their analytical skills. Group discussion, the sharing of ideas, and learning together form the crux of this course.
