20-21 MA3023: Animation and Visual Effects (Animation)

The Animation and Visual Effects unit builds on the second year option. Students will learn more sophisticated techniques in areas such as character animation, motion graphics, visual effects and 3D graphics that will enable a wider range of productions and aesthetic directions. There will be a lot of cross-over between animation and VFX, combining techniques as the need arises. The course will have more of an emphasis on project work, with more classes orientated to towards problems that have generally arisen during productions and in project tutorials.

We will be introducing new equipment including digital hand drawn software like TV Paint and 3D animation like Cinema 4D. We will also be continuing to develop skills with After Effects and Photoshop, especially as ways to bring everything together. Classes will usually be a combination of screenings, discussions, demonstrations, practical exercsises and homework.

This module is a prerequisite for the Spring term MA3024 Animation and VFX module and many students go on to take both.
